Pet Loss And Grief

pet loss grief

Eight days ago, my beautiful cat had to be put to sleep. My heart feels so heavy and I feel a deep sense of guilt in making that difficult decision. He was only five years old, which made it so much harder.

My home feels so empty without his presence. I keep waiting for him to greet me at the door when I come home, but he is no longer there. I miss holding him in my lap when I was working on the computer. I find myself thinking about all of the adorable things he did and my heart just aches.

This has been especially hard on my daughter, as this is her first real experience with loss. He was her buddy and they grew up together. It breaks my heart to see her cry and miss him so deeply. We talk about the things we love about our kitty and I try to let her know that his spirit is still with her.

I have lost a child, my father, other family members and friends. I have lost other cats as well. Each grieving experience is so different, but the aching and sadness are the same. When you love someone and they are suddenly gone from your life, there will be a void… an emptiness that will take time to mend.

If you are grieving the loss of a pet, just know that your sadness is normal. Guilt is also very common if you had to be the one to make the painful choice of letting your pet go. Many choose to get another pet right away and others wait for a while. You should do what is best for you and your family.

Honor your precious pet by creating a photo collage to hang on the wall. If you have their ashes, put them in a special place in your home and add one of their favorite toys and a photo to the display.

Whenever I lose a pet, I like to write down all of the cute and funny things they did that made me smile. That way I would never forget all those little quirky traits and their memory stays fresh in my mind.

My heart goes out to you if you are grieving right now. Be gentle with yourself and know that they are at peace on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

This is one of my favorite poems. I look forward to the day when I can see all of my beloved pets again. Rest in peace little Oscar… Until we meet again. ❤️
